6:41 P.M.
Sydney gave herself an assessing once over.
Sheâd added a few curls to her hair and left it hanging loose around her shoulders even though she knew the weight of it on her neck would make her hot later. Sheâd put on more makeup than she usually wore when she went to work, partly because she wanted to look her best, and partly to cover the bruise on her forehead from her scuffle with the killer the other day, but not too much because she didn't want to look like she was trying too hard.
Even though she was.
She wanted tonight to go perfectly. Not just well but perfect.
Scrutinizing her outfit, she very nearly decided to changeâfor the fifth timeâbut decided that the soft lilac silk of the sundress clung to her body, showing off her small curves without being too revealing, and was nice enough if he was taking her to a fancy restaurant while not being too dressy if he had something more casual in mind.
Sydneyâs gaze fell to the bandage wrapped around her left forearm. She wished there was something she could do about it, but for the time being she was stuck with it, so she may as well just pretend it wasn't there.
She added a little bit of lip gloss and then smoothed her hands down her dress and decided that primping in the bathroom was only going to make her more nervous. And really there was nothing to be nervous about. What was the worst that could happen tonight? Sheâd already kissed him, and she knew he wouldnât pressure her for more than she was ready to give.
Levi Black was the opposite of what her father had told her men were like.
Okay, so he was charming and sexy, and he liked to flirt, but he was deeper than that. He didn't just want her for her body because he could have any number of women who were a lot more willing to fall into bed with him than she was. He liked her, he wanted to get to know her, heâd been nothing but sweet and fun, and she knew that sheâd been right and that her father had tried to brainwash her into believing lies.
She might not know what Levi saw in her, but so far he had given her no reason to doubt him, and as her years of therapy had taught her, she wasn't going to overanalyze things because that only led her to a bad place. When she stayed too long inside her own head all her doubts started to creep back in, and before she knew it, she was back to being the quivering, terrified teenager who had been brainwashed and abused.
But she wasn't that girl any longer.
Now she was a strong, confident, independent woman.
Yes, she was shy in new situations, especially around men she didn't know, but she was a cop now, and she had worked hard to get to a place in her life when she was ready to metaphorically and physically leave her past behind and start over.
